The Path to the Badge

Here's exactly what to expect from application to your first day on patrol. No surprises — just a clear, step-by-step process.

What to Expect

The hiring process for the Des Moines Police Department is thorough by design. We're looking for candidates who are honest, physically fit, mentally resilient, and committed to serving the community.

01
Day 1

Online Application

Submit your application through the City of Des Moines job portal at desmoineswa.applicantpro.com. Make sure your application is complete and accurate — any omissions or inconsistencies will be reviewed during the background investigation.

Tips

  • Complete all fields thoroughly
  • Attach your resume and any certifications
  • Double-check dates and employment history
02
Week 2–3

Written Examination

Qualified applicants will be invited to take a written exam testing reading comprehension, writing ability, and situational judgment. The exam is designed to assess your ability to communicate clearly and think critically under pressure.

Tips

  • Study reading comprehension and grammar
  • Review basic report writing
  • Get a good night's sleep before the exam
03
Week 3–4

Physical Agility Test

Candidates who pass the written exam will complete a physical agility test (PAT) based on the WSCJTC standards. The test measures your ability to perform the physical demands of law enforcement work.

Tips

  • Train consistently for at least 8 weeks prior
  • Focus on running, push-ups, and sit-ups
  • Review the WSCJTC PAT standards online
04
Week 4–6

Oral Board Interview

A panel of department personnel will conduct a structured interview to assess your communication skills, judgment, integrity, and motivation for a career in law enforcement.

Tips

  • Be honest and direct in your answers
  • Prepare examples from your work or life experience
  • Research the Des Moines community and department
05
Week 6–14

Background Investigation

A thorough background investigation covers your employment history, criminal record, financial history, references, and personal conduct. This is the most time-intensive phase of the process.

Tips

  • Be forthcoming about your history — omissions are disqualifying
  • Notify your references in advance
  • Gather employment records and contact information
06
Week 10–16

Polygraph & Psychological Evaluation

Candidates who pass the background investigation will complete a polygraph examination and a psychological evaluation conducted by a licensed professional.

Tips

  • Answer all questions honestly
  • The psychological evaluation is not a test you can study for
  • Get adequate rest before each evaluation
07
Week 14–18

Medical Examination

A comprehensive medical exam and drug screening ensure you meet the physical health standards required for law enforcement duty.

Tips

  • Disclose all medical history accurately
  • Avoid any substance use prior to testing
  • Bring a list of any current medications
08
Week 16–20+

Conditional Offer & Academy

Candidates who successfully complete all phases will receive a conditional offer of employment and be enrolled in the WSCJTC Basic Law Enforcement Academy. Academy training is fully paid by the department.

Tips

  • Academy is approximately 720 hours over 6 months
  • You will receive full pay and benefits during academy
  • Field training follows academy graduation
